Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Genii Software officially opened its doors in 1993, but our first product was released in 1995, so we tend to count from there. We celebrated twenty years in business last year.
What is your primary product or service?
Our primary products are related to coexistence between IBM Notes/Domino and other email system, as well as extensions that enhance IBM software offerings including IBM Notes/Domino, IBM Notes Traveler, IBM Connections and the new IBM Verse. CoexLinks Fidelity has evolved since we first introduced it in 2003, and now offers high fidelity outbound/mobile/web email to enhance the ROI of IBM Notes/Domino and IBM Verse infrastructures. AppsFidelity offers similar high fidelity applications.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I started working with software in college in the early 1980s (despite my major in Latin American Studies) and then worked in software development and planning with several companies from the Philadelphia Stock Exchange to Jones Day after our move to Cleveland. When I decided to launch Genii Software, it was because I could see major gaps in the Lotus Notes platform and thought there would be a good opportunity to fill those gaps. Our first major success was the Midas LSX, an extension to the core programming language in Notes that we introduced in 1997 and that still sells well today. After 2002, we have focused more on plugin solutions that empower IBM Domino and allow coexistence and compatibility between Domino and Microsoft Exchange and other email systems. These solutions can be implemented by administrators without any development requirements, and have been popular enough that we have customers in 48 countries around the world.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We honestly have little competition in our areas of specialty. While there are other companies that handle aspects of coexistence and migration between IBM Domino and other email system, nobody comes close to our proprietary rendering engine used in CoexLinks Fidelity, so those vendors come to us when they need high fidelity rendering. Similarly, another part of the rendering engine is used in AppsFidelity, and there are no competitors for that at all. You could say that we have differentiated ourselves by carving out a unique niche.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We are a modern "virtual" company in that we have no stores. Our headquarters are in Shaker Heights, but we have people working elsewhere, as well as resellers in Europe, Australia and the U.S. We are planning to add more resellers in Asia, and will likely grow some to support those resellers and markets.
Which areas do you service?
Worldwide.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I own the company outright, and run the relatively minimal daily operations with help from other vendors for payroll, marketing and sales.
What are your hours of operation?
Technically, 9am to 5pm Mon-Frid, but most of our work is in support, so if the customer is in Australia, we may be helping them at midnight. We have no storefront, so the hours of operation are not very relevant.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
My favorite compliment is when customers tell us that they have forgotten that our software is there, as the rendering on mobile devices or in email looks so similar to what was designed. I have had customers turn off the software to prove to themselves it is doing something, and then quickly turn it back on when they see just how much it is doing. So, the best compliment to us is that it makes everything seamless enough to forget it is there.
